Mackay is an easy region to visit and a rewarding one to explore, as long as you respect two things: it is a real working city, and its outdoors are best enjoyed in the cooler, drier half of the year.
Getting there
Mackay sits on the central Queensland coast, roughly midway between Brisbane and Cairns. There are direct flights from major Queensland cities, the long-distance coastal rail line stops here, and the Bruce Highway runs through — around eleven hundred kilometres from Brisbane, a genuine two-day drive if you want to enjoy it. For a short trip, fly.
Getting around
The region is best explored by car. The city centre is walkable and rideshare and taxis cover the evenings, but the northern beaches, Eungella and the valley are all drives — and the drives are part of the pleasure. A hire car is worth it if you want to see beyond the city.
Where to base yourself
Accommodation clusters in the city centre and along the northern beaches. The centre puts the main venue, restaurants and the marina within easy reach; the beaches trade that for sand at your doorstep. When a major event, festival weekend or industry conference is on, rooms across the region book out — reserve early.
When to go
The cooler, drier months (roughly May to September) are the sweet spot: warm days, low humidity, and the busy events calendar. The wet season brings heat, humidity and dramatic skies — and is when the indoor shows and the green, misty rainforest are at their best.
Make a weekend of it
- Coast and country: a beach sunrise at Cape Hillsborough one morning, the drive up to Eungella the next.
- Show plus scenery: a Friday-night performance in town, a Saturday out in the Pioneer Valley.
- On the water: the marina is the launch point for reef, island and fishing trips.
